The Glenwood Cemetery is a 62 – acre property in downtown Picton.
This historic cemetery with its trademark hills, winding roads and tall trees is
typical of the Victorian era and is the final resting place for many of the
area’s pioneer settlers and their families. In recent years, the cemetery has
been restored including an elegant stone chapel with its six stained
glass windows.
Cook Memorial Fountain
The Cook Memorial Fountain was
donated to the Cemetery in 1968 in memory of
George John Cook and his wife Ellen
Jane McMorran.
This beautiful tribute to George and Ellen Cook was refurbished
and rededicated
through the generous support
of Essroc and it's partners in the
fall of 2007.
History of Glenwood Cemetery
History lives here in stone and silence. The graves at Glenwood each detail
the story of a past life and time. Colonial, tablet stones carved in limestone
or marble mark the early graves.
Site
Heritage
Glenwood has had
several lives. It was once the site of a brewery. In the 1860's, a
tannery was located on the grounds. When the tanning factory closed in
1864, it became a farm, and then was chosen a few years later as the site for a new
cemetery.
Today, Glenwood retains its charm and beauty.
Glenwood Cemetery is an
active cemetery with many plots available and many more acres of land
for development. Glenwood is also an urban forest and parkland enjoyed
by local residents and many annual visitors.
Chapel
The centrepiece of the grounds
is the Glenwood Chapel built in 1901. This graceful, stone building is
designated as an Ontario heritage site. In recent years, the building
has undergone extensive renovation.
The extensive fundraising campaign to restore the Chapel's five stained glass
windows is now complete and they are installed.
Stop by this summer and see these magnificent works of
art.
